Every Tuesday, Fantasy Football Brothers scours the waiver wires and looks for the best players that are out there and who can improve your team. Whether they are short term or long term answers, we will identify what they will bring to your team.
Week 3 was the week of the WR (Again). The spreading out of the field has really diliuted the numbers at receiver spot. Losing Kenny Britt for the season who had been playing at a top 3 WR level is a big loss for fantasy owners. We saw two lesser known wideouts in Victor Cruz (More on him in part 2)for the Giants and Torrey Smith of the Ravens just explode on to the fantasy scene. Owners who weren’t watching the game on TV and just saw Smith’s stats scroll across the screen were thinking the exact same thing as a million other owners were thinking. Who are these guys? I have to pick him up on waivers this week.
Baltimore Ravens
Torrey Smith – BAL – WR, vs. New York Jets, Sun 8:20 PM
Rookie WR Torrey Smith exploded on to the fantasy scene this week. Smith’s Playstation 3 like numbers were sraight up insane. He finished with 5 receptions for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns. All reports during training camp was the Smith was blazing fast and a poor route runner. When the Ravens traded for WR Lee Evans that all but sealed Smith’s fate as nothing more than a potential WR3 on his own team. Evans’ injury allowed Smith to start and he took every advantage. He has decent potential but with home run threats they are boom or bust. Smith has at least earned more snaps and potentially more if he can continue to take advantage of his extra playing time with Evans out. Worth a look in ten team leagues. Must own in deeper leagues.
Buffalo Bills
Scott Chandler – BUF – TE, at Cincinnati Bengals, Sun 1:00 PM
Chandler has been off to a great start. As mentioned above with all of the so called elite TEs not living up to expectations, guys like Chandler have emerged as viable fantasy plays. Chandler’s numbers are a tad misleading. Chandler now has four touchdowns in four games despite only having 9 receptions. Worth a look in deeper leagues and performance leagues.
David Nelson – BUF – WR, at Cincinnati Bengals, Sun 1:00 PM
Nelson has emereged as the second WR to own in Buffalo. The groin injury of Steve Johnson is very concerning and if he continues to play there is a good possibility that it will get much worse. Nelson is a big target perfect for redzone looks. He has caught 16 passes in the last two games. Nelson is a must own in 10 team leagues.
Chicago Bears
Dane Sanzenbacher – CHI – WR, vs. Carolina Panthers, Sun 1:00 PM
Sanzenbacher is now tied for 2nd on the Bears in receptions with 9. Yes that isn’t a lot through 3 games but we have seen the rookies involvement in the offense grow with each game. He has 8 receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns in his last two games. Worth a look in deeper leagues.
Cincinnati Bengals
Bernard Scott – CIN – RB, vs. Buffalo Bills, Sun 1:00 PM
(Update 9/27 Cedric Benson’s suspension is still up in the air, he could potentially play) Scott wouldn’t be even on this list if not for Cedric Benson’s upcoming three game suspension. Scott has speed and has shown flashes at times. He has never been able to come even close to unseating a mostly average Benson. Soctt is a must own in all leagues for the next three weeks since he will be the starter.
Cleveland Browns
Montario Hardesty – CLE – RB, vs. Tennessee Titans, Sun 1:00 PM
Hardesty had a decent day after Peyton Hillis owners were hit with his surprising inactive status Sunday. Hardesty showed enough on Sunday that he is at least capable of being a decent backup. The Browns have already said they want to limit Hillis’ touches and now they should have some faith in rolling out Hardesty. Must own for Hillis owners and in 12 team leagues.
Mohamed Massaquoi – CLE – WR, vs. Tennessee Titans, Sun 1:00 PM
Massaquoi has begun to emerge as the Browns best WR as WRs Greg Little and Josh Cribbs continue to cancel each others potential out. MM leads the team in targets and yardage. He is worth a look in deeper leagues.
Denver Broncos
Eric Decker – DEN – WR, at Green Bay Packers, Sun 4:15 PM
With Brandon Lloyd’s return in week 3 and the loss of Eddie Royal for at least a few weeks, Decker continues to make the most of his chances folowing up his coming out party of 5 receptions for 105 yards and two scores with a 7 receptions for 48 yards game in week 3. The Broncos are funneling targets down Deckers way. We identified him as a potential player since he was drafted. Plagued by injuries his rookie season and inconsistent QB play, he is now well on his way to having a huge break out this season. He has gone from sleeper to a WR3. Decker is a must own in all formats.
Indianapolis Colts
Curtis Painter – IND – QB, at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Mon 8:30 PM
Painter could take over for Kerry Collins who has taken a beating so far this season. Though nothing is set in stone. Painter can’t put up any numbers worse than Collins already has. Not roster worthy.
New York Giants
Victor Cruz – NYG – WR, at Arizona Cardinals, Sun 4:05 PM
Cruz had a huge game in Mario Manningham’s absence scoring two touchdowns. Manningham is expected back this week, which would mean that Cruz will move back to the slot. The good news is that Cruz is progressing in his development. Manningham’s play in the slot last season, allowed for the Giants to cut bait with Steve Smith. Continue to monitor Cruz’s development.
Philadelphia Eagles
Vince Young – PHI – QB, vs. San Francisco 49ers, Sun 1:00 PM
If QB Mike Vick can’t go it would be safe to assume that the Eagles would go with VY instead of QB Mike Kafka. Young has been banged up in the early part of the season but is expected to practice all week long. Worth a look for Vick owners.
Steve Smith – PHI – WR, vs. San Francisco 49ers, Sun 1:00 PM
With WR Jeremy Maclin dealing with a hamstring injury there is now an opportunity for Smith to find the field on a more regular basis. How bad Maclin’s injury is will truly effect how much value Smith now has. Smith has become more involved in the Eagles passing game already. If Maclin is ok, Smith has no value. If he is hurt worse than is being reported Smith is worth a look in deeper leagues.
San Francisco 49ers
Kendall Hunter – SFO – RB, at Philadelphia Eagles, Sun 1:00 PM
Fact of the matter is RB Frank Gore has not appeared in a full slate of games since 2006. Gore left Sunday’s game with an injury and did not return. Reports are that he will be able to play this Sunday against the Eagles. Hunter is a must own for any Gore owner and in 10 team leagues or deeper.
Tennessee Titans
Matt Hasselbeck – TEN – QB, at Cleveland Browns, Sun 1:00 PM
The NFL has made it a point to shut down RB Chris Johnson and force Hasselbeck to throw. So far that strategy is not working. The Titans are 2-1 and Hass has been one of the better fantasy QBs through 3 weeks. He is averaging 300+ yards per game passing. He is in the top ten in scoring amongst fantasy QBs and has thrown 5 touchdowns to just 2 INTs. The loss of Kenny Britt could hurt Hasselbeck’s bottom line and is something to be watchful of. Worth a look in smaller leagues and a must own in 10 team leagues or deeper.
Nate Washington – TEN – WR, at Cleveland Browns, Sun 1:00 PM
With the loss of Kenny Britt for the year the weight of the passing game now falls on Washington. He has posted better than expected numbers through 3 weeks 21 rec. 258 and 1 touchdowns. He had his most productive game after Britt was out. He is only owned in 8.6 % of all leagues in ESPN. He is a must own in 10 team leagues or larger.
Jared Cook – TEN – TE, at Cleveland Browns, Sun 1:00 PM
There was a lot of buzz this off-season about this being the year that Cook would emerge as a legit pass catching threat. So far he has been just an after thought in the resurgent passing game of the Titans, posting just 5 receptions for 53 yards. Now that Kenny Britt is out for the season, the Titans will need Cook to step up. He is athletic enough that he could be split out and the Titans have hinted around doing so. Continue to monitor.
