Owner's are dancing if they have "Every Coach's Dream."

There are some rules in keeper league’s that all of us owner’s go by. It is a credo, a strict set of rules we manage our teams with, not to be strayed from the path.

One is when a runner is nearing the age of 30, it is in our best interest to cut bait and go catch another younger runner. It is the over 30 rule in the NFL that has been drilled into our heads. Love it or hate it, it is not a trend, it is a fact. Running backs slow down when they hit the age of 30. Some players can defy the laws of aging, thinking Thomas Jones here, and some have a hard time making it to 30, thinking Clinton Portis.

It all has to do with tread on the tires. How many carries has a back taken in their careers. It’s just a natural progression, much like the 370 carries in a season theory which is rule number two. It states that if a running back gets 370 carries in a season, they will break down the following season. It has been fairly accurate over the years and one should not tempt fate.

Now imagine you apply that to a player for a number of seasons, like a Larry Johnson, and what you get is a player who has no tread left on the tires, another example of this is Jamal Lewis’ career. They go downhill fast, like an out of control Mack truck carrying a load of manure with no brakes. One can’t ignore the smell as they rush by, it is a warning, heed the warning fantasy friends.

There are reasons that younger player’s are ranked ahead of proven runners in these rankings, and it has to do with these examples I just gave. Ask yourself, if I’m in a keeper league, would I rather hold onto Clinton Portis for one more season, or go get a Jahvid Best in my rookie draft. The answer is simple, Best is your best bet.

It is also in an owner’s best interest to try and gauge their near over the hill runner and get as much value out of them as possible. Is their an owner in your league that is ready to win now, can you get draft picks for your Thomas Jones or LaDainian Tomlinson. Does another owner need a handcuff that you own, say a Chester Taylor because he owns Matt Forte? These are all questions we need to address before our draft night.
