The Washington Redskins have made the biggest splash during the offseason with the hiring of H.C. Mike Shanahan and landing QB Donovan McNabb. Who would expect anything less from owner Daniel Snyder?
Now the team must protect their new quarterback as well as address the running back situation that grows worse with each passing day. Clinton Portis, Willie Parker and Larry Johnson oh my!
In the Crosshairs will break down a teams recent draft history and get a feel in the direction they might or should go in the upcoming 2010 NFL Draft.
Recent 1st Round Draft History:
2009: Brian Orakpo-DE-Texas
2008: No Pick
2007: LaRon Landry-S-LSU
2006: No Pick
2005: Carlos Rogers-CB-Auburn—-Jason Campbell-QB-Auburn
The Redskins hit on Brian Orakpo in last year’s draft and he was an instant impact for the team’s defense. LaRon Landry has developed into a productive safety and had 90 tackles on the season last year. The Redskins missed out on serious value in 2008 and 2006 by not having a first round draft pick and maybe with the successful drafts they have had in recent years they will start to hold onto picks.
This season with the signing of Donovan McNabb and new coach Mike Shanahan look for the ‘Skins to start a makeover on offense. This should be done from the inside out and OT Russell Okung from Oklahoma St. is the prized offensive lineman in this draft. The Redskins offensive line needs to get younger and healthier if they are to protect McNabb and open any holes for the bevy of fossil running backs the team has decided to sign in Willie Parker and Larry Johnson.
The team needs in the 2010 draft are OT, RB, G, and DE. Fantasy Football Brothers looks for the Redskins to grab Okung with their first pick(4th overall), then look to trade QB Jason Campbell for any value they can get, preferably a second rounder to replace pick 37 they gave up in the McNabb deal. If the Redskins can get a second rounder the most likely candidates would be Jahvid Best or Jonathan Dwyer, both would be ideal in Shanahan’s system.
If the team can’t unload Campbell they don’t have a second or third round pick and would need to hit deeper down in the draft. Overall this has been a productive offseason for the Redskins and their fans’, if Campbell is dealt it makes it that much sweeter.
