1ST LOOK: 2010 FANTASY MOCK DRAFT

Brees Is The First QB To Go In Our Newest Mock Draft

In case you haven’t heard the NFL combine kicks off this week. All eyes will be tuned into the annual event that is quickly becoming must see t.v..  In fact the NFL has given out more than 620 media credentials and the NFL network has reportedly sent 21 employees to cover the event.  Wow!  That’s a lot of media personnel considering the players themselves won’t even be wearing pads.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of the combine and an even bigger fan of the NFL draft. I have watched every draft since I was 12 years old. I gush over forty times and love  sitting down with the other Brotherhood writers evaluating players and breaking down game film.  I know it does not matter what round these players get selected, the important part is where these players end up. A player with a specific skill set that fits the teams philosophy will have a major impact on an NFL team and most importantly the potential fantasy football impact.

Boston College's Matt Tennant Looks On At The Senior Bowl. The Path To The Draft Continues This Week With The Combine

This is especially true if you happen to play in a dynasty league.  The rookie draft is often the showcase and most exciting part of any dynasty league.  In most of these formats your annual draft only consists of incoming rookies and scrap pile free agents. That makes the combine all that more intriguing and important.  I’m one of the lucky ones who get to participate in this type of league so I’ll be sure to pay close attention to whats happening throughout the week.  However, I know that there are a number of fantasy players who aren’t as fortunate to be involved in dynasty leagues.(If you can get into one I would recommend. Fantasy football 365 days a year, what could be better?)  Around this time of year there isn’t much the average fantasy owner can take away from the combine.  Most rookies will impact standard drafts but not until the mid to later rounds.  So I have decided to take a break from the combine and draft coverage that will be reported here and everywhere else.  Instead I gathered 11 other people who wanted to look ahead to the 2010 season.  With the help of some friends we were able to conduct our first mock draft of the season.  Is it early? Absolutely.  But it’s never to early to start looking ahead.

The first thing we need to do is recognize that there are a number of issues that are likely going to impact our ranking as the season nears.  Teams are going to improve and players are going to be on the move.  For this mock we’re going to assume that Bret Favre returns for another season with the Vikings.   His decision will ultimately determine the fate and value of Adrian Peterson, Sidney Rice and most of the Vikings skill players.   We will also assume that wide receivers Anquan Boldin and Brandon Marshall return to their teams, even though it’s quite possible both could be on the move.  We will also assume that running backs Thomas Jones and Joseph Addai remain on their current teams as well.

It’s a lot to assume but in the big scheme of things it’s a small price to pay for us to start to get an idea of where these players might fall come August and September.  This mock draft consists of 12 teams and we drafted for six rounds.

Each team will start 1QB-2RB-3WR-1TE.

It’s a standard yardage scoring league with .5 points being rewarded per reception.

Passing touchdowns are worth 5 points and rushing and receiving touchdowns are worth 6.

Is There Really Any Question Who The First Pick Would Be?

1st Round Breakdown*

Trends: Running backs still rule the day in the first round as 7 of the 12 picks are backs.

Questionable Call: RB Steven Jackson (7th overall). I like S.Jackson but he plays for the Rams and they could be even worse than last year.  Couple this with his injury history and one has to wonder if it would have made more sense to go with a safer option like Aaron Rodgers who was selected with the following pick.

Solid Selection: QB’s Drew Brees 6th overall & Aaron Rodgers 8th overall.  Both players are elite and safe options heading into 2010.  I feel the quarterback position is one of the most crucial to a teams success making both these picks solid. Yes I am a huge fan of drafting elite QB’s.

You Have To Get Your Elite QB Early

2nd Round Breakdown*

Trends: Wide receivers rule the round as 8 of the 12 picks are wide outs.

Questionable Call:RB DeAngelo Williams (14th overall).  Much like RB Steven Jackson I’m a big fan of Williams.  I just think there is to much uncertainty surrounding his situation to warrant him coming off the board with this pick.  First off, we know he’ll split carries with Jonathan Stewart.  Second why not grab a back who is certain to get a majority of the work load and the goal line carries?  But hey… it’s only a mock draft.

Solid Selection: Taking QB Peyton Manning with the first pick of the round.  Peyton is an elite option and the most consistent quarterback in football.  Also Selecting Jammal Charles with the 20th pick offers tremendous upside.  You can make an argument that he should be considered a top 5 back.

3rd Round Breakdown*

Trends: Wide receivers again rule the round as half (6 of the 12 picks) are wide outs.

Questionable Call: I actually liked most of the picks in this round.  I guess if I had to choose one it would be the WR Marques Colston pick.  I like him, I just think some of the wide outs selected after him hold more value.

Solid Selection: RB Jonathan Stewart (30th overall).  After his slow start Stewart was an absolute beast heading down the stretch.  He offers borderline RB1 production and is a great value pick in the middle of the third round.  I envision his role in 2010.

Here We Go!

The TE Position Is Becoming Deeper And Deeper

4th Round Breakdown*

Trends: Overall it’s a well balanced round but it’s worth noting the first tight ends come off the board.

Questionable Call: Like the 3rd round, most of the selections made in this round are difficult to argue against.  If I had to choose one it would be the TE Antonio Gates selection.  I know Gates is an elite talent but the tight end position is one of the deepest heading into 2010.

Solid Selection: Getting QB Ben Roethlisberger with the 48th overall pick offers tremendous value.  We know the Steelers will try and get back to their running ways but it’s clear Big Ben has made the leap into QB1 status.

5th Round Breakdown*

Trends: Running-Backs rule the round as 5 of the 12 picks are backs. Owners look for value with the Running-Backs, since all have question marks attached to their names.

Questionable Call:  WR T.J. Houshmanzadeh (52nd overall).  I didn’t like the Housh selection.  I would rather have opted for one of the younger wide outs selected later in the round.

Solid Selection: RB’s Knowshon Moreno (51 overall) and Shonn Green (58 overall).  Both second year backs offer great value and plenty of upside for the 5th round.  Both could be high end RB2′s in 2010.

We Like His Value Heading Into 2010

6th Round Breakdown*

Trends: Another well balanced round with a number of the picks offering tremendous upside and value.  The Running-Backs again rule the majority with 5 more being selected. Owners continue to look for RB value later in this mock.

Questionable Call: RB Ahmad Bradshaw (72 overall).  I like Bradshaw and it’s tough to call him a questionable pick this deep into the draft but his value is attached to teammate RB Brandon Jacobs.  If Jacobs can stay healthy and return to his 2008 form then he could cut into Bradshaw’s production.

Solid Selection: WR Mike Sims-Walker (64 overall).  Sims-Walker is a WR1 and should have gone a round or two earlier.  This is a great value pick that offers significant upside.

One Response to “1ST LOOK: 2010 FANTASY MOCK DRAFT”

  1. I like to see mock drafts this early:) Fun to speculate.

    My reactions:
Reggie Wayne way too early. He may not be my #1 choice with the Colts.

Brain has the best team as long as Turner returns to form.

Bill blew it. Ahmad as his #2 running back is a disaster. He could have taken Shonn Greene instead of B. Roeth and he would have been set. B. Roeth does not get you meaningful seperation over playing the waiver wire for QB’s where as Greene will have a significantly better year then Ahmad.

    Just my thoughts
