Revis has been a Fantasy Team Killing Shut Down Corner in 09

The Best Shut Down Corner in the Game. This Week's Victim: Chad Ochocinco.

Heading into this years draft, the 09 fantasy season was deemed “The Year of the Wide Receiver”. Drafts trends had wide-outs going early and often with the mentality that the top notch pass-catchers were safer plays than questionable runners.

Stud wide receivers are almost a weekly shoe-in for fantasy production. Notice I said “almost”. There is one thing…. I mean one person to be weary of: Darrelle Revis.

Andre Johnson: Week 1 vs. Revis: 4 catches for 45 yards.

Randy Moss:   Week 2 vs. Revis: 4 catches for 24 yards.

Week 11 vs. Revis: 5 catches, 31 yards, 1 TD

Marques Colston: Week 4 vs. Revis: 2 catches for 33 yards.

Terrell Owens: Week 6 vs. Revis: 3 catches for 13 yards.

Week 13 vs. Revis: 3 catches for 31 yards.

Mike Sims Walker: Week 10 vs. Revis: 2 catches 23 yards (had a 26 yard touchdown that game, but Revis was not in coverage.

Steve Smith CAR: Week 12 vs. Revis: 1 catch for 5 yards.

Antonio Bryant: Week 14 vs. Revis: 2 catches for 22 yards.

Roddy White: Week 15 vs. Revis: 4 catches for 33 yards.

Reggie Wayne: Week 16 vs. Revis: 3 catches for 33 yards (only played a half).

Chad Ochocinco: Week 17 vs. Revis: o catches for o yards, 4 targets.

These numbers are staggering. We’re talking about  one man shutting down the fantasy royal chamber of wide-outs. Jets coach Rex Ryan has been quoted to say that Darrelle Revis is the best corner back in football. Through 17 weeks of play – I’d have to agree with him. This is the most dominating single season I’ve ever witnessed by a corner. Nnamdi, Champ, Woodson and Asante are all top performers, but Revis is at the head of the class. Playing the match-ups is always a risky thing, but it’s something to consider. You should always start your studs, but expect a serious fantasy compromise from your top WR when facing the New York Jets. Heading into your fantasy playoffs, I’d be weary around drafting “85″. I believe the Bengals will pull off the win, but it will be close. The Bengals passing game has been off. True, Chad has returned to fantasy relevance after a slump in 08, but Revis is too good. Ocho had scored in 4 straight outings, prior to last week’s shutout. The Bengals passing game is no where near what it once was. Carson Palmer has only one 300-plus yard effort this season. I’m a big Ocho fan, but he should be resting on fantasy benches this weekend.
