The 2010 NFL Draft is drawing near. The College Juniors have declared for the Draft and the slots are pretty much set. The NFL Draft is a crapshoot at best and many Mock Drafts are filled with tales of fantasies and not on a team’s need. There are alot of “sexy” picks made by draft pundits and the flavor of the week this week happens to be Jimmy Clausen taking over the top spot in alot of Mock Drafts.
While I see this as a possibility because the St. Louis Rams have a need at quarterback, why would it be Clausen and not Sam Bradford who could have gone as the number one quarterback last year? I do think the Rams will trade out of the top slot and gain value deeper in the draft where they will be able to take a quarterback and yet add another impact player who can speed up their rebuilding project.
If the Rams can’t trade the top pick and are forced into taking Ndamukong Suh, it will give them an impact player who is NFL ready to be a major disruption along the front line, but it will also slow down the rebuilding process in St. Louis.
NFL MOCK DRAFT 2.0
1.St. Louis Rams-Ndamukong Suh-DT-Nebraska-The Rams really need a QB, but how can they pass on the best defensive tackle prospect in years. I wouldn’t be surprised if they trade down to get value deeper in the draft. Suh frequently sees double teams and he still disrupts all facets of the game. He is above and beyond the best player on the board, an NFL ready defensive force.2. Detroit Lions-Russell Okung-OT-Oklahoma St.-The Lions must address the offensive line, they have ignored it too long. They must protect Matthew Stafford so he can actually get Calvin Johnson the ball. The pick makes sense for a team with a young, promising quarterback.
3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Gerald McCoy-DT-Oklahoma-The Bucs must get more physical on defense and in McCoy they get a player who gives this defense some of their swagger back. He is an instant upgrade to that defensive line.
4. Washington Redskins-Trent Williams-OT-Oklahoma-The “sexy” pick here is Jimmy Clausen of Notre Dame, but if you watched this team last year the running lanes were closed down, Jason Campbell was damn near killed, and the offensive line is aging and always seems to be injured. No use in drafting a quarterback if you can’t protect them, I also think Jason Campbell is not that bad.
5. Kansas City Chiefs-Anthony Davis-OT-Rutgers-The Chiefs gave Matt Cassel a nice, big contract. Davis is a way to protect their investment and also will help an aging front. Davis is also a mauler in the running game, which in turn will aid in the development of Jamaal Charles. GM Scott Pioli knows how to build a team.
6. Seattle Seahawks-Eric Berry-S-Tennessee-The Seahawks are under a new regime and they get a “playmaker” with this pick. Berry will give the Seahawks a physical presence they haven’t had since the days of Brian Bosworth…all kidding aside insert Kenny Easley.
7. Cleveland Browns-Derrick Morgan-DE-Georgia Tech-Morgan will give the Browns an instant upgrade in the pass rush department. The Browns as a whole weren’t bad down the stretch and this is the type of pick that new GM Mike Holmgren will build around.
8. Oakland Raiders-Joe Haden-CB-Florida-The Raiders have so many holes they are hard to project, add in the fact that their owner is a little insane, this pick actually makes a little sense. Haden is a shutdown corner and will give stability to the other side of the Raider’s secondary. Teamed with Nnamdi Ashomugha this is a formidable secondary.
9. Buffalo Bills-Sam Bradford-QB-Oklahoma-Bradford is the best signal caller in this draft and the Buffalo Bills and Chan Gailey get their quarterback of the future as J.P. Losman, Trent Edwards, and Ryan Fitzpatrick were not the answer in Buffalo.
10. Denver Broncos(from Chicago Bears)-Dez Bryant-WR-Oklahoma St.-This pick only makes sense if Brandon Marshall were to leave, which I think he will. Bryant is the type of receiver that can come in right away and produce in the Broncos offense.
11. Jacksonville Jaguars-Jason Pierre-Paul-DE-South Florida-The “sexy” pick here is quarterback Tim Tebow, all for the reason of selling tickets for a franchise in trouble. Problem is this franchise isn’t that bad and adding the raw and talented Pierre-Paul helps them much more than Tebow does on the field.
12. Miami Dolphins-Rolando McClain-ILB-Alabama-The Dolphins get the best linebacker in the draft and McClain fits right in with their 3-4 scheme. He is a fiery and intense presence on the field that is a Bill Parcells type player. This is a steal at this spot for a player of McClain’s caliber.
13.San Francisco 49ers(from Carolina Panthers)–C.J. Spiller-RB-Clemson-The 49ers offense could use a “shot” in the arm and Spiller is the exciting playmaker that fits that bill. This pick makes sense for many reasons, one being that the offense is bland and the other is the team that is drafting right behind them at this spot. (cue Seahawks fans crying) Spiller is a nice compliment to Frank Gore in the running game, a change of pace back that Glen Coffee doesn’t offer.14. Seattle Seahawks(from Denver Broncos)-Bruce Campbell-OT-Maryland-The Seahawks have been hit hard along the offensive front. The theivery of Steve Hutchinson by the Vikings and the natural aging process of Walter Jones make this the elephant in the room. Campbell is a very large elephant who can run and pass block.
15. New York Giants-Carlos Dunlap-DE-Florida-Dunlap is talented and versatile which is why this pick makes sense. The Giants do a great job of getting these type of players and developing them into productive NFL players. Dunlap’s value has taken a hit because of a DUI arrest, this is a steal if Dunlap can put everything behind him, oh and catch a ride to the stadium with Justin Tuck.
16. San Francisco 49ers-Bryan Bulaga-OT-Iowa-The 49ers offensive line play struggled last year and the running lanes were closed down quick last year. Enter Bulaga who is a “lunch pale” guy. He is the type of player that head coach Mike Singletary loves to coach up.
17. Tennessee Titans-Brian Price-DT-UCLA-The Titans defensive front is aging and Brian Price will give them a jolt of youth and energy. He is a disruptive force in both pass and run defense. Price is still somewhat raw, but his seven sacks as a junior show the potential is there to be a productive defensive tackle at the NFL level.
18. Pittsburgh Steelers-Taylor Mays-S-USC-The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be hit hard in free agency at the safety position as Ryan Clark and Tyrone Carter will be hitting the open market. This leaves the door open for Mays, who has all world ability and size, but maybe had too high of expectations placed on him in college. There is another former USC safety (Troy Polamalu) who he could be paired with and make a very intimidating defense that much more intimidating.
19. Atlanta Falcons-Patrick Robinson-CB-Florida St.-The Falcons were not very good against the pass last season, finishing 28th in the league. Robinson will help give this secondary some swagger and also give them a playmaker.
20. Houston Texans-Earl Thomas-S-Texas-The Texans are looking for a playmaker at the safety position and Earl Thomas is that player. He can play in coverage as well as step up and play the run. This will be a popular pick for this franchise.
21. Cincinnati Bengals-Arrelious Benn-WR-Illinois-The “sexy” pick I see in most mocks is that of TE Jermaine Gresham. I happen to think that with the death of Chris Henry, giving Carson Palmer another receiver is at the top of the list. The Bengals don’t throw alot to their tight ends anyway and Chase Coffman is still developing.
22. New England Patriots-Sergio Kindle-OLB-Texas-The Patriots if they don’t trade out of this pick need to go defensive as they have been hit hard in the past year. Sergio Kindle will help this defense immediately and will further aid in the develpoment of Jared Mayo.
23. Green Bay Packers-Mike Iupati-OL-Idaho-Iupati is flying up draft boards and the Packers are in need of offensive line help as they are an aging bunch. The Packers must do a better job of protecting Rodgers if they are to compete. Iupati is 6’6, 330 lbs. and is quick and agile for a man his size. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is too low.
24. Philadelphia Eagles-Brandon Spikes-MLB-Florida-The Eagles don’t have many offensive needs they need to address, so this pick makes sense. Spikes is a playmaker who has a nose for the ball, he comes ready made to compete from day one. He fits the mold of an Eagles player, tough and tenacious.
25. Baltimore Ravens-Golden Tate-WR-Notre Dame-The Ravens are in need of a wideout if they don’t get one in free agency. I’m sure Brandon Marshall’s name will be tossed around, but if they lose out on him, they would be wise to draft Tate.
26. Arizona Cardinals-Dan Williams-DT-Tennessee-Williams is a nice fit into the Cardinals 3-4 defense and would be an upgrade over incumbent Bryan Robinson. Williams developed nicely under Monte Kiffin at Tennessee and flashes solid upside.
27. Dallas Cowboys-Jon Asamoah-OL-Illinois-The Cowboys were embarrassed this season in the playoffs and alot of it had to do with the offensive line play. Look for Jerry Jones to address this situation immediately and get the top offensive lineman still available.
28. San Diego Chargers-Jonathan Dwyer-RB-Georgia Tech-The Charges are in need of a running back that can work between the tackles and Dwyer is that guy. He is a nice compliment to Darren Sproles in the running game and LaDainian Tomlinson’s days appear to be numbered.
29. New York Jets-Chad Jones-S-LSU-The Jets need some help in the secondary and Jones is a guy that is flying under the radar as of this time. This might change come combine, but I would expect his stock to rise through these ranks. This pick makes an already good secondary that much better.
30. Minnesota Vikings-Jimmy Clausen-QB-Notre Dame-I know, this is awfully low, but I’m not sold on Clausen and his intangibles. The Vikings draft their quarterback of the future after Brett Favre walks away for good. We haven’t seen this far of a fall since another Notre Dame alum in Brady Quinn in the 2007 NFL Draft.
31. New Orleans Saints-Sean Weatherspoon-OLB-Missouri-The Saints are in need of help at linebacker and Weatherspoon is a ready made pro who could step in and be productive along side Jonathan Vilma. Those two paired together improve this defense greatly.
32. Indianapolis Colts-Navorro Bowman-OLB-Penn St.-The Colts were hoping Weatherspoon would fall, but they reach out to Linebacker U and grab Bowman who gives them the youth and energy at linebacker they are looking for. They get a steal here.
