WEEK 9 TE RANKS

Posted by in Fantasy Advice,Ranks,Tight Ends on Nov 6th 2009 and last modified on Nov 7th 2009. (Print This)

Friday at Fantasy Football Brothers means final rankings.  This week we’ll be without  Owen Daniels who was lost for the year after tearing ligaments in his knee.  It’s a shame because he was fun to watch and on his way to a career year.   Jason Witten cracks the top spot for the first time.  Witten hasn’t performed up to his draft slot but that could all change this weekend against the Eagles.  They have been one of the worst teams defending the tight end this year.  We also expect another big week from Fantasy Football Brothers favorite Brent Celek.  It looked like Donovan McNabb took our advice and took advantage of the young tight end.  The players outside of the top eight on this ranking come into week 9 with several question marks heading down the stretch.  Are any of  them going to emerge as an unquestioned weekly option?

1) Jason Witten – DAL – TE
Witten has a great match up this weekend against the Eagles. The Eagles have had difficulty covering opposing tight ends this year so Witten should benefit. Look for Witten to live up to his draft slot if only for one week.

2) Dallas Clark – IND – TE
Clark has been one of the most consistent tight ends in football. Peyton looks for him early and often and that will only continue going forward. Clark puts up wide receiver numbers providing owners with an elite weekly option.

3) Antonio Gates – SDC – TE
We didn’t think Gates would play well against the Raiders and he didn’t. He was limited in practice earlier in the week but only to get some mid season rest. He’s fine and will play this weekend. We can expect a rebound game for Antonio this weekend.

4) Brent Celek – PHI – TE
Celek is a Fantasy Football Brothers favorite. McNabb finally looked his way on Sunday and it showed in the box score. As long as McNabb continues to feed him with a healthy number of targets he will stay in the top 5 of our rankings. He’s one of the best tight ends in football after the catch and that will be on full display this weekend against Dallas.

5) Vernon Davis – SFO – TE
Davis continues to put up respectable TE1 numbers. Alex Smith looks for him constantly in the redzone. He gets a healthy amount of targets on a weekly basis and we don’t see “The Freak” slowing down anytime soon.

6) Heath Miller – PIT – TE
Miller has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy owners this year. No one has benefited more from the Steelers new pass happy offense. He continues to see a steady amount of targets making him a borderline TE1 going forward.

7) Tony Gonzalez – ATL – TE
Tony Gonzalez has been the biggest victim of Matt Ryan’s struggles. It was a positive sign to see Ryan target(9) the veteran tight end so many times Monday night. The good news is that the Falcons are at home were Gonzalez has scored in all three games this year. Look for that trend to continue this weekend.

8) Jeremy Shockey – NOR – TE
Shockey has been another pleasant surprise from the tight end position this year. He has been able to stay healthy, something that has been in obvious problem in years past. The only thing that really hampers his production is the number of options in the Saints offense. Look for him to remain a solid option at the tight end as long as he’s on the field.

9) Greg Olsen – CHI – TE
We expected a big day from Olsen on Sunday. He was only targeted 4 times resulting in 3 catches for 40 yards. The bears attempting to dial down the playbook in hopes to better utilize there weapons. Until that can show it works he remains a low end TE1 going forward.

10) Fred Davis – WAS – TE
All eyes will be on Davis this weekend. He has plenty of upside even on while playing for the lowly Redskins. Campbell should utilize the talented tight end making him a borderline TE1.

11) John Carlson – SEA – TE
Carlson hasn’t been able to display his skills in the passing game because he is simply asked to stay in and help block. That is not going to change going forward. However, he does have a great match up this weekend against the Lions. If your going to use him this is the week to do it.

12) Kellen Winslow – TAM – TE
Winslow has the unfortunate luck of having to play with a rookie quarterback. In the past rookie signal callers have relied heavily on there tight ends so there is a glimmer of hope. We just don’t think Josh Freeman is very good. Avoid using Kellen if you can.

13) Todd Heap – BAL – TE
Heap has managed to stay healthy this year. Unfortunately it hasn’t helped his production. He was only targeted 4 times against the Denver resulting in 3 catches for 16 yards. Not exactly starter material. Heap should only be considered a TE2 going forward.

14) Kevin Boss – NYG – TE
Boss is a gifted pass catcher. He could have the best hands out of any tight end in football. However, he doesn’t get his number called enough to warrant a start unless your in a jam.

15) Donald Lee – GRE – TE
Lee will again get plenty of opportunities with Finley most likely out. He was targeted a healthy 7 times but found the touchdowns going to tightend/fullback Spencer Havner. Lee makes a solid bye week fill in this weekend.

16) Tony Scheffler – DEN – TE
We were all waiting to see what Scheffler would do for an encore after blowing up in week 7. Unfortunately 1 catch for 9 yards isn’t going to cut it. Outside of Brandon Marshall, I Wouldn’t use any of the Denver pass catchers.

Kellen winslow is the real deal and inspite not having a consistant QB he has been a big surprise this year and should be top ranked. Imagine if he played for a top ranked team? He would be a top 3 ranked TE

We totally agree with your comment, but the fact of the matter is that he plays for a horrible Tampa team. Josh Freeman will make his NFL debut this weekend. The quarterback merry-go-round has not helped Winslow’s production. Is he an elite talent? – Yes. Could he be a potential top 3 TE elsewhere? – Yes. But he does not play elsewhere. He’s a Tampa Bay Buc.
