1ST LOOK: HIT or MISS

Posted by in Fantasy Advice on Oct 26th 2009 (Print This)

Every Monday and Tuesday Fantasy Football Brothers takes a 1ST LOOK around the NFL where we provide instant analysis of what it all means in fantasy nation.   In this weeks installment of HIT or MISS we check out the players who were studs and who were duds.  This week I left several of the quarter backs who performed and met our expectations off the list.  So you wont find Brady, Peyton, Rodgers, Brees and Rivers.  All deserved to make the list but all were all ranked in our top 6.  We expect them to be studs every week.  Instead I ranked the guys who out performed our expectations.  Palmer and Romo finally provided there owners with an outing they could be happy with.  Cedric Benson had a career day rushing as Matt Forte continued on the road to bust town.  Sidney Rice, Wes Welker and Ochcinco proved to be PPR machines and a couple tight ends continued on there career years.

Fantasy Football Brothers is very excited to announce a huge change coming that we will release on November 1st. Be on the lookout. Let the hype begin.

The Hits

1) Carson Palmer – CIN – QB
Palmer finally showed up on Sunday. He completed 83% of his passes for 233 yards and 5 touchdowns!

He looked like the guy who was once considered an elite option at quarterback. This is something we’ve been waiting for. Did he finally knock the rust off after missing most of last year and the preseason? I hope so.

2) Tony Romo – DAL – QB
Romo is another guy that was considered a top three option as early as last year. His mental lapses and poor accuracy have left several of us wondering if he’ll ever be one of the guys you can plug into your lineup and not have to worry about. If he continues to play like he did Sunday then we’ll have our answer. Romo completed over 70% oh his passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns. His steady play can be tied to the next guy on this list.

3) Miles Austin – DAL – WR
Austin was a Fantasy Football Brothers sleeper and favorite this preseason. It took a little longer then we liked but he has arrived. Austin caught 6 passes for 171 yards and 2 touchdowns. He runs good routes displays good hands and has a solid chemistry with Tony Romo. His big play ability alone, makes him a weekly start.

4) Vernon Davis – SFO – TE
We highlighted Davis in our tight end ranking as a guy who could have a big week. The physical marvel didn’t let us down. With Alex Smith taking over for the infective Shaun Hill, Davis was able to have a career day. He hauled in 7 passes for 93 yards and 3 touchdowns. Alex Smith is another guy who get honorable mention for his week 7 performance.

5) Cedric Benson – CIN – RB
Benson returned to his old stomping grounds and went off. After a week that focused on his negative departure from the Bears, Benson swore to us he wasn’t out for revenge. It didn’t look that way on Sunday. Benson ran with speed and power all day long. He carried the ball a ridiculous 37 times for a career high 189 yards and a touchdown. With a stat line like that it’s easy too see why Benson makes are hits list.

6) Chad Ochocinco – CIN – WR
Ochocinco rounds out the Bengals who made our HITS list this week. Palmer targeted him 11 times and Ocho managed to catch 10 of them. He turned his 10 catches into 118 yards and 2 touchdowns.

7) Shonn Greene – NYJ – RB
Greene looks to be the biggest beneficiary from Leon Washington’s injury. The highly touted third round pick came into the preseason as a possible redzone vulture. Instead he found himself buried on the Jets bench behind Jones and Washington. After Washington went down Greene got the ball 19 times and turned it into 144 yards and 2 touchdowns. The knock on him entering the NFL draft was that he didn’t display top end speed. He looked plenty fast to me on his 33 yard touchdown run. He’s going to be the waiver pickup of the week.

8) Ricky Williams – MIA – RB
Rickey only touched the ball 11 times but he did plenty with them. Williams had 92 total yards and 3 touchdowns, including a 68 yard touchdown run. Although the Dolphins gave the game away, Ricky is thriving in the wild cat. He’s on pace for over a 1000 yards and is a low end running back 2 going forward.

9) Thomas Jones – NYJ – RB
Jones continues to impress. Not to be over shadowed by Shonn Greene’s performance, Jones carried the ball 26 times for 121 yards and a score. He has proved to be one of the most consistent backs in the game on a week to week basis.

10) Vincent Jackson – SDC – WR
Jackson continued his trek to becoming a top tier wide out. He remains Phillip Rivers go to guy as he was targeted a game high 9 times. He pulled in 5 of them for 142 yards and a score. He’s a wide receiver one going forward.

11) Ryan Grant – GRE – RB
Grant is another guy who rewarded patient owners with a huge day. Grant amassed 148 yards on 27 carries. He also managed to find the endzone, something he is widely criticized for. Grant is the only legitimate option on the ground for the high powered Packers.

12) Owen Daniels – HOU – TE
Daniels is quickly becoming one of the best tight ends in all of football. Against a 49ers team that has been very good defending opposing tight ends, Daniels went off. He was targeted a team high 9 times on Sunday. He caught 7 of them for 123 yards with a 42 yard touchdown. We don’t see a decline anytime soon.

13) Wes Welker – NEP – WR
Welker remains a PPR stud. Welker caught all 10 of his targets and amassed 107 yards and also managed to find the endzone. He is Tom Brady’s favorite target and should again battle for the league lead in receptions.

14) Sidney Rice – MIN – WR
Brett Favre has devolped a solid chemistry and clearly trusts Sidney Rice. Rice led all players Sunday with 14 targets and receptions with 11. He turned his 11 catches into 136 yards. He would have scored but he was tackled on the 1 yard line. Rice remains one of the biggest surprises of this year.

TheMisses

15) Greg Jennings – GRE – WR
Jennings has found himself on this list more often than he would probably like. Considered a top 10 preseason wide out, Jennings continues to disappoint. He was targeted a game high 8 times but only managed 5 receptions and 52 yards. He also failed to reach the endzone again. He’s bordering on bust status.

16) Matt Forte – CHI – RB
Forte is another preseason top 5 pick who is bordering on bust status. Forte only managed 49 total yards and should no longer be considered a must start.

17) Frank Gore – SFO – RB
Gores much anticipated return to action didn’t go as planned. He had 15 total touches for only 47 total yards.  Not the big day we expected.

18) Jay Cutler – CHI – QB
Cutler was considered a solid match up play entering Sunday. He did throw for 251 yards and a score but was picked off 3 times. He’s making Josh McDaniels preseason decision to trade him look genius.

19) Matt Ryan – ATL – QB
This is the second game in a row that Ryan failed to throw for 200 yards. He attempted 35 passes but only completed 54% of them. He did throw 2 touchdowns but was also picked off twice as well.

20) Ahmad Bradshaw – NYG – RB
We expected a solid outing from Bradshaw. After out producing Brandon Jacobs for most of the season we thought his roll would expand. What we got was 13 touches for 27 yards and a lost fumble. The fumble helped keep the momentum in Arizona’s favor. The Giants have now dropped two in a row.
