Fantasy Football Brothers rolls out their 3rd mailbag in as many days yes I know its not 3 days in a row. I meant business days in a row, it was a busy weekend here, the staff had 9 drafts in the last two days, thats a lot of drafts, but is there anything better? The best part is some leagues grade the drafts immediately after the draft, which makes for pretty funny conversation. You have the owners who love their teams. (those teams usually bomb) Owners who hate their teams(Owners end up with a surprisingly decent team in the end) When grades are handed out, and the other staff can attest to this. Any team given the best grade is usually the kiss of death. Try it out sometime, and see if our theory works out. The season is around the corner, and drafts are going on everywhere, at anytime. Even though its way before my time I’d like to quote Andy Williams “It’s the most wonderful time of the year”. Between drafting, updates, college ball starts this weekend, and then all of the hours spent reading, the money dropped on publications, the wasted hours on the phone talking out Brady, or Brees, the million emails trying to get 12 guys in a room for 4 hours for trash talking abuse all comes to an end next thursday night when it all counts. Oh yeah I almost forgot, I won’t edit anything unless of course it is going to bring the man on me. Let’s get Mailbag 3 rolling…..
From Deac:
Here is the league scoring… I am 12th pick out of 12 teams. RB/RB, RB/WR, or WR/WR with a chance at 2 of AJ, Fitz, Calvin J, or Moss – and which teo would be a tough decision. My other league I had the same exact pick and had the dilemma of which 2 veteran backs I wanted and little star receivers left when it came back at 36,37. So what do you think about 12,13 then 36,37, then 61,62? Strangely in my other league 5 QB’s were gone by pick 12…

Rob the answer man:
I am a big fan of going with two elite WR’s at pick 12. It puts you ahead of the game and then allows you to focus on other positions to round out your team. Say if you end up with the dream scenario of Fitz and A. Johnson, then you can shift your focus to a QB or RB. In the case of the 12th pick I like going with a QB and RB to help balance out my team as a QB run usually occurs between then. If you think you can nab a Matt Ryan, Tony Romo, or Aaron Rodgers a round later, then by all means go RB/RB your next picks, if not, if Brees, Brady, or Manning are taken you have to go QB then RB to help balance your team. Getting a reliable QB is understated in drafts and you will be glad you drafted one, worry about your RB depth later as the RBBC (Running Back by Committee) has saturated the position and you should be able to get good value later.
So in summary I would go WR/WR with my 1st and 2nd round pick, then go QB/RB with my 3rd and 4th round pick, then focus on RB’s for the rounds 5-8. Again if a WR has fallen during this time don’t be afraid to draft them as they will give you more value than reaching on a RB. Please remember and I have seen it in the latest drafts, please wait on drafting a kicker and defense until the 14th and 15th round, this allows you to get more value. And another thing, if you don’t get the top 4 TE’s off the board in Tony G., Witten, Gates, and Clark please wait until the 13th round when you can still get a Kevin Boss or Brent Celek, again optimizing your value out of the other positions.
Ryan asks:
Hey there,
Ok, i really need help! I’m in a 10 team PPR league. Its a four player keeper league. Rushing/receiving gets twice as many points as passing TD’s, although you get 1 point per 15yrds passing.
We start 2 qbs, 3 wrs, 2 rbs, 1 te, and one w/r flex player. I have kept Marion Barber (Dal), Greg Jennings (GB), Pierre Thomas (NWO), and Marshawn Lynch (Buf). I do NOT have a second round pick! I have 2 fourth rounders, and one pick in everyother round.
My question is how should i go about my draft? Almost all of the top 13 QB’s are gone except Carson Palmer. Obviously the top 40 guys are gone, apart from a couple players (Steve Smith, Roddy White, Ronnie Brown, Brandon Marshall). I have the 8th pick in the first round, so i prolly won’t get these guys. What positions should i draft in what round? Take a tier two QB in the first round? Get another RB? Start getting WR’s?? Help?!!?!?!
Shaun:
Wow,
We need a quarterback. Palmer might have to be your first pick by default. In a 2 start QB league that becomes your biggest concern. With no second round pick, it’s too risky to try and hold out until the third. He’s a QB sleeper that I definitely have my eye on.
You’re in a good spot at running back so that can wait. With Lynch an Barber, you can target Felix Jones in the middle and Fred Jackson in the later rounds.
PPR RB’s to cash in on: Ray Rice, Derrick Ward, Darren McFadden, Reggie Bush, Leon Washington
Quarterback and Wide Receiver need to be your focus. If Steve Smith or Roddy fall to you – by all means draft them. I would hesitate with Brandon Marshall. Although he is a reception machine, his off-season antics may place him in the “DO NOT DRAFT NO MATTER WHAT” List. Here are some other wide-out suggestions to target:
Bowe, Ocho, Eddie Royal, Anthony Gonzalez, Houshmandzadeh, Antonio Bryant, Braylon Edwards, Lee Evans, V-Jack, Berrian, Mason, Hines Ward, Donald Driver, Kevin Walter, Chris Henry, Torry Holt – in relatively that order.
Later round WR sleepers: Nate Burleson, Hixon, Nate Washington, Laurent Robinson, Percy Harvin, Josh Morgan, Patrick Crayton,
Sleeper QB’s that should out-produce their draft spots: Matt Hasselbeck and Trent Edwards have looked impressive in preseason play, Garrard has always been under-valued and should bounce back with a revamped O-line and a legit target in Torry Holt.
Granted your biggest voids are at WR and QB, if your pick comes up and you find that your not happy with the talent pool at these positions and there is better running back value – go with it. Best available player can over-rule position of need if it’s the right player. Worst case scenario you have a great flex play and trade bait.
Hope this helps. WELCOME TO THE BROTHERHOOD! Good Luck. Let us know how you made out and feel free to use us for any waiver wire, trade or drafting question as it arises

Rob:
Thank you for the information you gave us to answer the question because when the question was asked by you last night it was a done deal as far as I was concerned because I thought you might be in a dynasty/keeper league where you keep 6-8 guys and this trade made uber-sense in the fact that you had Brian Westbrook and you would be getting LeSean McCoy who would step in and be his successor eventually (eventually being key word here.) Also you would be gaining some youth at quarterback with Matt Ryan over Phillip Rivers and the Falcons have given Ryan some new toys to play with in the passing game. The reason I say thank you for the added information is because I do not think this trade makes sense for you to pull the trigger being is your league only keeps 2 players. While it is considered a keeper league when it comes down to keeping 2 players year in and year out there are often tough decisions to make on who to keep. I don’t know if LeSean McCoy will be that guy for awhile and for the immediate future with Ryan you would be taking a slight downgrade from Rivers and his 34 touchdown passes last year while Ryan, while we like his moxy, truth be told plays in a run first offense. I think we saw last year what Rivers can do when the Chargers can no longer rely on the running game, the boy can chuck it with the best of them. While he isn’t in the company of Brees, Brady, or Manning, he is on the outside looking in. In short, we do not think you should make this deal but that’s just us. One thing to remember is yes it’s nice to have a handcuff but not at the expense of value in other positions. I doubt very much that McCoy would see your starting lineup much anyway for this season which is why we do not like the trade. Hope this helps and good luck in your fantasy season.
Kevin asks:
My name is Kevin. I am in a 16 team keeper league with head to head scoring. You start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 (RB/WR/TE), 1 K, 1 D (team). QB scoring: 1 point/25 yds, 4 pts TD, -2 pts INT. RB/WR/TE scoring 1 pt 10 yards (rush or receiving), 6 pt/td (rush or receiving or punt/kick return), -2 pt, fumble, 1 pt 4 recept. This is where it gets weird. We can keep up to 4 players, and the first 4 rounds are random draft order so if you keep 1 player you lose your 1st round pick, if you keep 3 you lose the first 3 rounds etc. In addition for each year after the first year that you keep a player they will cost you an additional 6 dollars. The 6 dollars comes out of a 100 dollar total that you have to bid on 6 players in auction rounds (rounds 5-10) after the first 4 non-auction rounds. After that rounds (11-15) are standard snake draft. My optional keepers are Brian Westbrook (-12 from my auction funds), Randy Moss (-6), Philip Rivers (Free), Leron McClain (Free). However, i won the “Toilet Bowl” game between the last 2 finishers which guaranteed me the first pick in the first round so essentially the first pick out of everyone who wasn’t kept. Who should I keep if anyone? My plan right now is to not keep anyone and take Moss if nobody special is out there. I can’t see a list of which players are being kept
Paul answers:
Congrats on winning the toilet bowl! I like the idea of letting Moss go to see whats available. I think your other option would be to keep Moss, Rivers and Westbrook. My only question is, how much do you value Rivers and Westbrook? Your league is very deep and the first four rounds could easily be a crap shoot. Will you be able to get equal or greater value if you let these three guys go? Rivers is a potential top 5 QB for free. Brian Westbrook would make great value in the 3rd round and Randy Moss is arguably the best WR in football. That makes a solid foundation for $18.00. Not bad considering we don’t know what will be available in the draft. The x-factor is Westbrook. If he is healthy, he’s as good as anyone in the game especially if you get points for receptions.
You need to do your homework and figure out who could be kept and at what price. This will give you a general idea of what could be available. If you think you could better in the re-draft then do it. I would build my core and keep Moss, Westbrook and Rivers.
Thanks for the question and
