Rumors have been flying that Michael Vick would be signed by weeks end. Every team has been mentioned as a possible suitor at one time or another. According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Philly has stepped up and pulled the trigger.
The birth of the “Wild-Cat” offense has created a new niche for the non-traditional passer. He has always been better on his feet than with his arm and the formation seems tailor-made for someone of Vick’s versatility . Teams that implemented “The Cat” in 08 used running backs or wide-outs who posed little threat in the passing game. Vick’s ability to do both is a offensive coordinator’s dream, and a defensive coordinator’s nightmare. Vick will take the formation to a new level.
In terms of fantasy value, Vick’s ceiling becomes lower if he is categorized as a QB. He won’t have the type of impact that will warrant a QB start, but if he falls into either a RB or WR slot – fantasy General Managers can become creative in his usage. Michael Vick as a WR3 or Flex play sounds intriguing to me.
Philly was already one of the fastest teams in the league, but this has them breaking the sound barrier. Eagles games will feel more like a track meet with Vick, Jeremy Maclin, DeSean Jackson, Brian Westbrook, and LeSean McCoy on the field. Shady has looked impressive in camp and performed in his preseason debut. In Vick you get insurance, not only on Donovan McNabb, but also Westbrook, and any one of the Philly receivers.
Those that passed on him could be wishing they didn’t come seasons end. The NFC East is as competitive as it gets and the Eagles just picked up one of the biggest wildcards in the game. WOW!
