2009 Running Back Projections

Welcome to FantasyFootball Brothers. We continue our Free Draft Kit as we roll out the running backs. It has been Running Back week here at F.F.B. and today we release our rankings/projections with commentary. The running back position is under the greatest flux of any position with the nightmare situation called the Running Back By Committee. The R.B.B.C. movement is in full swing making the position diluted and oversaturated with specialized players and split duties. Though the list is very long, the ranks toward the end don’t necessarily mean the players won’t shoot up in the ranks come the following weeks. With the first week of camp stories have been flying out from the local papers and news media about how rookies and underused players look impressive, and how all of the players returning from injury look explosive. Fantasy Football Brothers will weed out the duds and find you the studs. We will expose the players that should get drafted so that you can stay ahead of the curve, and not have to luck out on the waiver wire.  We are Fantasy Football Brothers ask us a Question and we will win you a Championship……

1) Adrian Peterson – MIN – RB

Enters as the Number One running back. AP rushed for 1700 yards and 15 and 28 rec. 235 yds rec. The upright power running style which has led to some health issues in the pros and in the college ranks is still a concern. Peterson has stayed relatively healthy missing one game in the last two years, and has reportedly bulked up to withstand the punishment. A similar output is almost assured even with the addition of WR/RB Percy Harvin’s arrival. A new QB can only take pressure off of the running game and involvement in the passing game can only further Peterson’s fantasy dominance. Peterson will be aided in running behind one of the better offensive lines in the NFL

2) Maurice Jones-Drew – JAC – RB

7 16 0 0 1181 13 61 537 2

Jones-Drew enters the season as the sleeper/wildcard of the top four. M.J.D. rushed for 824 yds with 12 tds and 62 rec. 565 yds 2 tds. With RB Fred Taylor off to the Patriots, Jones-Drew inherits the bulk of the carries, something in which he has never done before. There in lies the Boom/Bust tag. Turner excelled while MBIII broke down. Fantasy Football Brothers is betting on the latter. M.J.D. is a threat catching passes and running the ball. Jacksonville’s offensive line was decimated by injuries last season, and it showed on the field. Garrard’s game managing ability went out the window with no threat of a running game coupled with the fact that the receivers were less than serviceable. MJD’s P.P.R.(Points Per Reception) rank puts him easily in the top 3

3) Matt Forte – CHI – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
5 16 0 0 1240 10 55 428 2

Forte was handed the starting job in training camp and did not disappoint putting up great numbers. 1,238 yds 8 tds and 63 rec. 477 yds. 4 tds. while accounting for over 80% of the Bears offensive output. Forte’s yards per carry are concerning as he appeared to slow down at the end of last season. The offensive line appears to have improved and the acquisition of QB Jay Cutler will also aid Forte’s y.p.c this year, keeping defenses honest and out of the box. The Bears will continue to use Forte in the passing game which adds to Forte’s P.P.R. ranking

4) Michael Turner – ATL – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
4 15 0 0 1497 13 9 45 0

Turner was the breakout player at RB last year rushing for 1,699 yds and 17 tds, while catching only 6 balls for 41 yds. The 377 carries last season remains a huge concern, especially with all of the documentation about the 350 carry plateau and the decline that usually follows. Turner will be aided this year in a more balanced offense with the emergence of former Boston College star QB Matt Ryan, add in the arrival of TE Tony Gonzalez and the passing game should take some pressure off the run game. Turner needs to become more involved in the pass game to make up for what should be less carries this year. Turners rank drops big time in P.P.R. leagues

5) Steven Jackson – STL – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
9 15 0 0 1232 10 45 398 1

Jackson rounds out our top 5. Jackson is probably the most talented of the bunch, but missing 4 games in each of the last two seasons has made him a huge injury risk. When on the field Jackson is usually the most talented player on the field, with a deadly combo of speed/power/and great hands. Jackson is a home run threat every time the ball is in his hands as evidenced by his 1,042 yds 7 tds rushing and 40rec. 379yds 1 td. Enter this season with a new coach, but less talent surrounding Jackson, and the odds might be even too much to overcome a talent like Jackson. SJack’s value goes up in P.P.R. leagues, and will probably be even more involved in the passing game due to St. Louis’ lack of talent on the offensive side of the ball

6) Chris Johnson – TEN – RB

7 16 0 0 1253 9 52 355 2

Johnson exploded on to the scene starting at the combine, into his first preseason game and right into the NFL season rushing for 1,228 yds,9 tds. and 43 rec. 260yds. 1td. Johnson was an absolute beast and the biggest playmaker hands down for the Titans offense in 08. The Titans will look to get Johnson in to open space with passes and swings to take advantage of his speed. Johnson averaged over 17 yards per catch last year which is a ridiculous numbers for a RB. The threat of a motivated RB LenDale White might cut into some of Johnson’s carries, but the Titans will often feature both backs in the same backfield.

7) LaDainian Tomlinson – SDC – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
5 15 0 0 1020 11 53 392 2

Tomlinson’s value has plummeted after being banged up the last two seasons and with that LDT’s out of this world production has taken a huge dip by his standards 1,110 yds 11 tds and 52rec.426 yds. 1td.. LDT enters the 09 season being labeled as potential bust, multiply that with RB Darren Sproles presence and the threat of stealing touches, and LDT’s value takes an even bigger hit. He enters training camp completely recovered from previous injuries and in great shape. LDT is on the decline no doubt about that, but an aging Tomlinson ceiling might be lower than previous years, but that cieling is still higher than most.

8) DeAngelo Williams – CAR – RB

4 15 0 0 1214 10 18 202 2

D.Will had a monster year last season 1,515 yds 18 tds. 22 rec.121 yds 2 tds…. Williams six 30+ yard touchdown runs was likely an aberration last year… Williams is in store for another great season, but with RB Jonathan Stewart as his backfield mate, a duplication of last seasons numbers are highly unlikely. Williams now has ridiculous expectations on him. Williams could have 1,300 yds. rushing and 10 tds, and D.Will will be considered a bust. If you temper your expectations, and know what your getting, Williams will prove to be a solid selection.

9) Brian Westbrook – PHI – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
4 15 0 0 931 8 59 469 4

Westbrook’s value (936yds 9td 54 rec. 402 yds 5tds.)took a big hit with the drafting of RB LeSean McCoy… Westbrook has three things working against him this year, he turns the dreaded 30, he is always banged up, and now McCoy his heir apparent has been drafted, though McCoy’s role has yet to be determined. Fantasy owners will be leery to select Westbrook with the threat of losing touches to the rookie. Westbrook still provides decent value even with all of this looming. Westbrook the last three years has put up top four RB production with total yards, touchdowns, and receptions. Westbrook is a P.P.R. beast and slide easily into the top five in P.P.R. leagues

10) Frank Gore – SFO – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
6 15 0 0 1205 7 51 365 2

Gore’s numbers suffered last year due to injury(14 games rushing 1036yd 6 tds 43 rec. 373 yds 2 td), poor QB play and playing catch up in most games… San Fran will feature a balanced offense this year and will run it through Gore… Gore is always good for 50-60+ rec. a year. Gore looked slow last year appearing to have lost a step, but that could easily be from being dinged up, and playing in a pass first system that had the offense spread out with defensive backs playing deeper, instead of the prevailing thought that he is losing his ability. I find the latter hard to believe despite his large workload. Gore will not be threatened by rookie RB Glen Coffee this year to cut in to his rushes, or TDs.

11) Clinton Portis – WAS – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
8 16 0 0 1306 9 27 209 0

Portis slides in at 11 based on the premise that his numbers which took a beating in the second half 543yds 2 tds stats after rushing for 944yds and 7tds in the first eight games, because QB Jason Campbell’s game went south in the last eight games… I’m betting on Portis having a strong year despite playing a very tough schedule.Portis will get his 300 plus carries, the offensive line looks improved and healthy. Portis consistently puts up top 10 numbers.

12) Brandon Jacobs – NYG – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
10 14 0 0 1125 13 12 80 1

Jacobs has been a TD beast(1089 yds rushing 15 tds), but had to split the load with RB Derrick Ward. Ward is now in Tampa Bay and  Jacobs will look to get more carries as long as he can stay on the field. The problem is keeping the behomoth on the field. Jacobs has missed ## games the last 3 years, due to his size and upright running style. Jacobs will continue to get carries as long as he is healthy. The Giants will continue to run the ball behind a great offensive line and with questions about all of the recievers, the Giants will probably have run the ball even more. Jacobs has the biggest upside of the players in the top 12. If Jacobs can ever stay healthy all season and gets at leas 275 carries or more look out.

13) Steve Slaton – HOU – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
10 14 0 0 1110 8 40 388 1

Steve Slaton had a monster rookie campaign (1,282yds rushing 8tds, and 50 rec. 377yds 1td)showing the NFL why he was such a devastating runner in college when playing in a similar zone blocking scheme… A repeat of last year may be hard to duplicate, but the Texans would be wise get Slaton in space and take advantage of his homerun potential. Though the Texans increased his load (due to desperation) as the season went on, Slaton would benefit from having someone capable of taking the short yardage carries, as Slaton proved ineffective scoring on only four rushes from five yards or closer on 21 attempts. Look for Slaton to become even more involved in the passing game this year, and Slaton is a top five P.P.R. pick

14) Marion Barber – DAL – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
6 15 0 0 967 10 45 341 2

MBIII suffered through an injury plagued season (appearing in 15 games though healthy for far less 885 rushing yds 7tds 52rec. 417yds. 2tds.)as the lead man in Big D… A healthy Barber provides great value as long as you know what you are getting… A between the 20′s runner that will score 10+ TD’s. Barber was most effective when he played the role of a football closer. Meaning he will occasionally get a few carries spelling the starter and then all of the short tough yardage carries including the goal line carries. Barber would then come in the 4th quarter and be the main guy for the rest of the game. Do not be surprised to see something close to a return to this type of game plan especially with RB Tashard Choice, and RB Felix Jones available to take some carries away. MBIII will have decent P.P.R. value

15) Pierre Thomas – NOR – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
5 15 0 0 944 9 36 345 2

Thomas shows up at 15 based solely on potential.(625yds 9tds 31 rec.284yds 3tds) It’s not a secret anymore that F.F.B. loves Thomas. Thomas did more with less touches 160 total touches 12 touchdowns than any other RB… With only Reggie Bush behind him, Thomas looks to get the bulk of the carries and take all of the goal line looks since Bush has proved that he is an ineffective runner. Thomas will catch some balls out of the backfield but with the return of Bush, his reception projection will take a little bit of a hit. Thomas still projects to be a top running back this year, though keep an eye out to see if the Saints sign someone late to take some of the load off of Thomas’s shoulders

16) Kevin Smith – DET – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
7 16 0 0 1105 7 37 280 1

Kevin Smith played on a terrible Lions team that went 0-16 last year.(rushing for 976yds. 8tds and39rec.286yds.) The Lions played from behind almost all of the season, add on to that the poor play at QB and the play at offensvie line and it becomes clear that Smith had his work cut out for him last year… Detroit looks improved on paper at least on the offensive side of the ball and that can only help Smith in his 2nd year as the lead man. Smith can take the next logical step to Fantasy Stardom this year, if Detroit can play their game and keep games close.

17) Ryan Grant – GRE – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
5 15 0 0 1198 8 21 104 0

Grant’s overall numbers took a beating as he appeared to struggle(1,203 rushing yds. 4 tds 3.9 y.p.c. and 18 rec. 116yds. 1td) throughout last year. But sometimes it is a matter of perception. The Packers had offensive line woes, and played catch up during the season this only hampered Grant’s overall value. A 3.9 yards per carry is below average for a starting RB. If the former ND star ups his y.p.c. and Rodgers doesn’t take 4 rushing TD’s from him, Grant becomes a top 10 back. Having high expectations for Grant this year are with in reason. There has been no one to steal carries in Green Bay, the offense looks better with Rodgers having a year under his belt and Grant can only go up from 4 rushing touchdowns, add in 30 receptions and he becomes a steal. Whats not to like?

18) Ronnie Brown – MIA – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
6 15 0 0 1089 7 28 260 0

Ronnie Brown had a remarkable return from a devastating injury(916 yds 10 rushing tds 33rec.254yds.) last year. Brown returned back to the field sooner than anybody expected and was productive especially when running out of the Wildcat formation… Here in lies the rub. If you take out Brown’s ridiculous game against the Pats when he torched them for 113 yds. and 4 tds. Brown only rushed for 803 yards and 6 touchdowns. Brown’s numbers might suffer this year after the Dolphins drafted made to order Wildcat QB Pat White, relegating Brown to the running back position where he was noticeably less successful. The good news is when Brown is healthy he is a stud, so the theory goes a player 2 years removed from major knee surgery is fully recovered. Ronnie himself has proclaimed he will breakout this season, which should mean that Brown will be back to full health. I guess we can expect a return to the gaudy numbers that Brown can produce when healthy minus the 13 games missed due to injury since 2005.

19) Marshawn Lynch – BUF – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
9 15 0 0 934 8 39 261 1

Lynch has entered the NFL with a bang (No pun intended) rushing for back to back thousand yard seasons (1,036 8tds and 47rec. 300yds 1td). Lynch is suspended for the first 3 games, killing his value, though Lynch will now probably be drafted a little later than he should. Buffalo has two very capable backs in RB Fred Jackson, and the producer(more on that later) Dominic Rhodes. If either one of these backs is overly successful Lynch will have his work cut out for him trying to play catch up with players having momentum to steal carries. Lynch has good speed, and can score from anywhere on the field, mix in some decent hands and Lynch’s value increases that much more. Draft and stash.

20) Derrick Ward – TAM – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
8 16 0 0 949 5 46 362 1

Ward comes from the Giants (rushing for 1,025yds just 2tds.and 41rec. 384yds)into a situation that he is perfectly comfortable with..A time share. Ward will look to cut into the oft-injured RB Earnest Graham’s touches after signing a big contract in the offseason… Tampa has been lacking a bruising back since Mike Alstott retired a few years back…Ward has shown he has good hands in NY showing that he can be a three down back if Graham is not ready to return to the field. Ward only started three games last year, the only thing that has hurt D.Ward’s value is the lack of touchdowns six total in the last two years if you are keeping score at home. That is why it is important to see who is assigned the goal line carries this will further increase Ward’s value.

21) Joseph Addai – IND – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
6 15 0 0 838 8 36 245 1

Addai has the most potential(12games 544 rushing yds. 5tds, and 25rec. 206yds 2 tds) of anyone outside of the top six… Addai came into ’08 as a consensus top five pick so his expectations have been lowered big time. Addai’s injury history coupled with the drafting of RB Donald Brown shows that the Colts also have a lot of concern about Addai… Addai is a dual threat monster when on the field but has been dinged up consistently every year since his rookie year(missing five games in last two seasons). With tempered expectations Addai can be a steal in the late 2nd or early 3rd. If Addai can get you 1,000 yards, 8 tds and somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 receptions he then becomes a steal.

22) Larry Johnson – KAN – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
8 15 0 0 1129 6 18 121 0

A new coach and a new year brings L.J. in at the 22 spot(12 games played 874yds 4.5 y.p.c. 5 t.d. and 12rec. 74yds.). If Johnson isn’t traded and is completely healthy, L.J. can rebound with huge numbers and return to form as a legit RB1, which will make him a potential first round steal. There has been much debate here at F.F.B. about L.J. I love him, everyone else here hates him, but I have been winning the hearts and minds over slowly at company HQ. Johnson will never return to 1,700 yds 17 tds, but 1,200 yds and 10 tds, is easily attainable. The offensive line looks much improved, a new quarterback in Matt Cassel  and a new offense are all things that work in Johnson’s favor. Look for a rebound, a huge rebound if healthy.

23) Jonathan Stewart – CAR – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
4 16 0 0 938 10 9 55 0

Stewart played the punisher role(836yds rushing 10tds.) to DeAngelo’s speed last season… Stewart will continue to get the rock between the 20′s as the Panthers will continue the smashmouth run game which was incredibly successful last season… Stewart must continue to improve if he is ever going to cut into D.Will’s numbers. If J.Stew is unable to improve, and Williams continues to run like a maniac, Stewart could get demoted to just short yardage back. Look for Stewart to improve. He needs to get more involved in the passing game though both backs were hardly involved. Stewart is a poor man’s Steven Jackson with a terrifying combination of speed and power minus the hands. If Williams goes down, Stewart would become a top 10 must start back every week.

24) Thomas Jones – NYJ – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
9 15 0 0 978 6 24 182 1

Jones had a breakout year in ’08(1,312yds 13tds, and 36rec.297yds 2 tds.) Jones has been trying to get a pay raise since the end of last year, though he could get cut before he gets a raise. Jones has been a very consistent durable RB, nothing spectacular until last years 13 tds. Jones has a lot of things working against him heading into camp. RB Leon Washington’s emergence coupled with the threat of RB Shonn Greene stealing carries and Jones’ stock continues to plummet heading in to fantasy drafts. Jones benefited from running behind one of the better offensive lines and had Favre to take off a lot of the pressure. Fast Forward to this season and the stellar line is still intact, but QB Kellen Clemens or QB Mark Sanchez will hardly spark fear in opposing defenses’ hearts.

25) Darren McFadden – OAK – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
9 14 0 0 883 4 44 326 2

McFadden should and could win the starting job from RB Justin Fargas this year, a year later (13 games 499yds 4tds and 29rec. 285yds) than most predicted after a injury plagued disappointing rookie campaign to put it mildly. McFadden has superior talent with his homerun speed, smooth as silk moves and soft hands coming out of the backfield… The Raiders have been committed to the run and have been able to run the ball with authority, the problem is the QB play, which continues to be a giant concern. Oakland will start to have the look of a three headed running back monster if McFadden doesn’t emerge and run away with the starting job this year

26) Willie Parker – PIT – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD
8 15 0 0 890 5 21 67 0

WillieP missed five games last year (11games 791rushing yds 5tds)with injuries, Fast Willie’s numbers were not all that impressive when on the field, though his TD total was up, his y.p.c. were down to a pedestrian 3.8 which is very concerning with a speed guy. Willie P continues to have his work cut out for him heading into this season. He comes into the season in a contract year and with the return of RB Rashard Mendenhall his numbers could suffer. Parker enters this year in a contract year so Willie P has much to prove and a lot to lose, look for a big year.

27) Chris Wells – ARI – RB

Wells is the first rookie to show up on the board and yeah he is probably pretty high on this ranking… Wells had durability issues in college though he showed up to camp weighing a svelte 224. When healthy he was a beast between the tackles… RB Tim Hightower couldn’t steal the job from the aging and plodding RB Edgerrin James, so I don’t expect Hightower to start over Wells… With the threat of the Cards passing game worrying opposing defenses Wells has the potential to run wild over opposing defenses provided he stays on the field.

28) Knowshon Moreno – DEN – RB

Denver has about 100 running backs right now, but with Moreno’s skill set he is by far the most talented RB of them all… Still there are a bunch of talented guys in Denver that will potentially keep Moreno from getting on the field sooner and also cut into his touches… Moreno might not be starting to begin the season, but will be starting by years end. The former Bulldog has just way too much talent to pass on.

29) LenDale White – TEN – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD

LenDale enters this year in what can only be termed a make or break year. White finished with 15 tds and 773 rushing yards while catching only five passes for 16 yards…I like LenDale more than my fellow writers because of this simple equation:Contract year + arriving to camp in shape + goal-line back + an inept passing offense = a promising season. LenDale will get his 200 plus carries, but if he can be more productive with those carries and up his y.p.c. this will increase his role, allowing the Titans to do more with the dynamic Johnson.

30) Jamal Lewis – CLE – RB

Lewis provides good value here at 30, though not the power back he once was(1,002 yds 4tds 23rec. 178yds). Lewis has been consistent and good for a 1,000 yards year in and year out… With no threats to emerge as of yet behind Lewis, look for JLew to have another solid year, but definitely not in spectacular fashion and could probably be closer to painful if his y.p.c.(3.6) does not improve. Though Lewis runs behind an above average offensive line, the passing game was horrific, and the Browns were always playing from behind. Hopefully a new coach, an improving defense and a consistent Qb can emerge this preseason and get the Browns heading back in the right direction.

A rejuvenated Benson?? (747yds rushing 2tds 20rec.185yds)Anything is possible in Cincinnati. Benson emerged out of nowhere towards the end of last season averaging over 140 yards rushing and receiving in the last thre games. Expectations need to be tempered, but Benson will provide great value when drafted after the 5th round. Benson is still young, the return of QB Carson Palmer and what should be a new and improved offensive line can only help Benson’s potential

32) Reggie Bush – NOR – RB

The best part of Bush’s game was Kim Kardashian… Bush is very valuable in P.P.R leagues(10 games 404yds 2 td and 52rec.440yds 4tds.) though will never rush for more that 500 yards in a season, but adds value to special teams so if you get points for kickoff and punt returns he does have the most value in that scoring format…Bush was off to a great start as witnessed by the numbers he put up. Though returning from micro-fracture surgery Bush has reportedly looked explosive in camp. The appropriate question about Bush staying healthy is how long will he stay healthy before he gets dinged up.

33) Donald Brown – IND – RB

Brown is in an ideal spot, playing in a high octane offense  and backing up a injury prone starter… Brown has the tools to be a star in this offense. Brown still has much to learn about pass blocking, though Brown’s athleticism will likely see the field sooner rather than later. Don’t be suprised to see Indy have multiple sets with both Brown and Addai on the field at the same time, especially since the search for Indy’s next slot receiver is still in progress. Brown offers great late value and could surprise, but has more value in P.P.R.

34) Julius Jones – SEA – RB

Jones looks to start this year after a poor ending to the season in ’08(698 yds rushing 2tds)… The offense was a train wreck last year and everything that could have gone wrong did. Jones did a decent job 4.4 y.p.c. despite a banged up offensive line, an injured QB, and a destroyed WR corps. Jones could return to the between the 20′s role with RB T.J. Duckett getting all of the goal line carries… New OC Greg Knapp used Duckett in a similar role when both were together in Atlanta. This situation bares close watching to see what roles will be established in training camp.

35) Ray Rice – BAL – RB

At worst Rice is a very effective 3rd down back(13 games 454 yds rushing and 33 rec.273 yds), and will get most of the passes of all the running backs in Baltimore(Yes that was to you P.P.R.guys). The best case scenario is Rice lives up to all of the offseason hype and is the main head of the three headed monster. Rice was a very effective runner in college, though not being particularly fast, or big. Rice has great vision, and is quick to the hole, and has a top 10 offensive line in front of him. Rice still officially has to beat out backfield mate RB Willis McGahee in training camp even though all of the pundits gave the starting nod to Rice in the off-season. Rice is a little on the small side and it remains to be seen how he handles an increased role pounding the rock

Felix could be especially valuable in P.P.R formats as the Cowboys will look to get Jones more involved in the offense especially if the wide receivers don’t get their act together. Three headed monsters scare me, and the one that is in Baltimore(RB Ray Rice, RB LeRon McClain) scares me even more…McGahee appeared to be the odd man out as the season ended(14 games 671yds rushing 7tds, and 24rec. 173 yds). McGahee has entered training camp with a chip on his shoulder. Coming off an injury plagued nightmare season: he came in underweight, add in losing his starting job during offseason mini-camps while Rice was recovering from offseason surgeries. By early reports McGahee has looked good and appears to be in great shape. McGahee is also probably playing for a contract since his cap number will begin to rise after this offseason. McGahee needs to show he has some burst, and explosiveness left. No matter what, Baltimore will have a committee approach this season but the number one guy still gets the most touches.

Graham won the starting job last season(563 yds 4 tds, and 23rec.174 yds), but Graham’s season ending injury (10 games played)was enough of a concern to sign free agent RB Derrick Ward. Ward and Graham are similar in size and skills though Graham has proved that he can carry the load. The Buc’s have installed a new offense and with questions at QB the Bucs would be wise to run the ball. This will also mean check down passes to the RBs. Roles need to be established in camp, but the smart money is on Ward being the starter due to the larger paycheck, but Graham has decent value especially in P.P.R. leagues.

Norwood was on the field a lot more last season rushing for 489 yds 4 tds, and 36 rec. 338 yds 2 tds. The Falcons have already stated that Turner can’t have as many carries this season which should mean more touches for Norwood. Harrison has shown explosiveness in limited playing time. 246 yards rushing 1td. and 12 rec. 116yds. 1 td.. Harrison needs to prove he is not RB Jerious Norwoods long lost twin with his 7.2 y.p.c. Harrison’s time is now with the recent coaching change. The Browns need a decent running game and have the o-line in place to take the pressure off of the winner of the QB competition

86) Peyton Hillis – DEN – RB

Hillis proved to be the best RB drafted out of Arkansas last year. Hillis ran for 343 yards and 5 touchdowns while having 14 rec. 179 yds. 1 td. Hillis late season arrival was rewarded by the Broncos bringing in a million more RBs to further muddle the situation. Hillis does offer value as a short yardage specialst the very least. Though with the entire Broncos RB squad training camp has to be watched very closely

87) Patrick Cobbs – MIA – RB

Cobbs value will only increase if he can beat out RB Ricky Williams, or someone goes down in front of him.  Cobbs showed his explosiveness against the Texans when he had 3 receptions for 138 yards and 2 tds

Greg Jones enters training camp battling RBs Rashard Jennings and RB Chauncey Washington for the back up role. Jones has the upper hand due to experience. Jones can also get on the field as the FB taking care of the short yardage duties.

Green-Ellis bailed out the Patiorts and Fantasy owners alike when he became the wiaver wire pick up dujour when he rushed for 5tds in 6 games and around 260 yards rushing. Barring injuries BenJarvus will be lucky to come out of camp with a roster spot

Hill enters training camp as an U.D.F.A. battling for a roster spot. Hill was a beast while at Wisconsin, but injuries over his career led to being undrafted. Hill will have his work cut out for him to make the roster, unless Bush isn’t ready for the season

91) Antonio Pittman – STL – RB

Pittman will battle RB Kenneth Darby, and rookie back Chris Ogbonnaya. Pittman nor Darby ever entrenched themselves as the clear cut favorite to back up the oft injured RB Steven Jackson. According to reports Pittman is behing Darby entering Training camp, though both might never establish themselves in a clear cut role. If SJack stays healthy no one will be roster worthy

Darby has the early nod heading into training camp for the number 2 spot on the depth chart, some one will need to be dominate to earn the right to pick up the SJack scraps.

Watson entered the 2008 seasons with high expectations after recording 763 yards rushing and 7 tds on top of his 52 receptions. Last year was a disaster for Watson who was plagued by injuries. If Watson can’t establish a role in camp he will get cut after the last season emergence of RB Cedric Benson

94) Michael Bennett – SDC – RB

Bennett enters 2009 in what is most likely his last chance in football. Bennett has absolute wheels, but has been unable to find his way on to the field, and now is battling for the 3rd spot behind RB LDT, and RB Darren Spoles

95) Javon Ringer – TEN – RB

Ringers was a highly productive runner in college and appeared to breakdown from over use as the season wore on. Ringer offers no value unless RB Chris Johnson or RB LenDale White get injured. Ringer could be a decent late dynasty draft pick

Leonard arrived in Cincy through a trade. Leonard was banged up most of last season though showed promise as a rookie. Leonard has decent hands and will at the very least the 3rd down back provided he stays healthy

98) Justin Forsett – SEA – RB

Forsett was a deep sleeper that I thought would be able to find his way on to the field last year with his homerun speed. The Seahawks used him for special teams only. Entering training camp Forsett has a chance to steal jobs and carries away from RB’s Julius Jones and T.J. Duckett. Keep him in your back pocket.

99) Thomas Brown – ATL – RB

Brown was another guy I pegged as a deep sleeper last season, but was injured and missed all of last year. Brown enter this season having to play catch up. The Falcons have stated that RB Michael Tuner needs to share the load. Brown has excellent size and speed, but needs to prove early in camp that he is ready for more.

Cadillac is finally recovered from a devastating injury suffered 2 years ago. Williams will hit the practice field and will have to come from far behind to get back on the field battling RB Earnest Graham and RB Derrick Ward.

Goodson was surprise at the combine running fast 40 yard times and showing soft hands. Though this year he will have a tough time getting on the field with RBs DeAngleo Williams, and Jonathan Stewarts firmly entrenched as thunder and lightning

Foster enters Texans training camp as a U.D.F.A.. Reports out of camp so far have been glowing thus far. Foster will battle RB Chris Brown for the role of backing up RB Steve Slaton, and handling the short yardage assignments. We will keep a close eye on this training camp battle because it could have signifigant fantasy impact.

Johnson will battle for the number 3 spot in Chargers training camp, and try to lock down a spot to be the replacement for when LDT moves on. This has Dynasty league impact and we will monitor this battle through the summer.

104) LaRod Stephens-Howling – ARI – RB

Stephens-Howling is best known for being the other back while playing at Pitt. S.H. has the speed but is lacking in the size department. The Cards are thin at RB so S.H. might have a minimal impact this year

105) Cedric Peerman – BAL – RB

Bye Week G PYDS PTD RUSH YDS RUSH TD REC REC YDS REC TD

Peerman was drafted for depth in what right now is a very crowded Ravens backfield. If the Rice experiment fails, Peerman could find the field sooner rather than later. Peerman was decent back while playing at Virginia but had injury woes that plagued him while at school

Thanks for finishing this we’d love to hear your thoughts
