1) Tony Gonzalez – ATL – TE
FROM: Kansas City TO: Atlanta – Gonzo was the most productive TE in fantasy football last year. On a very bad Kansas City team he managed to post big numbers. (96rec. 1056yds 10tds) At age 33 he gets a fresh start and the chance to add to his hall of fame resume. Do you think Matt Ryan was the happiest man in Atlanta when this trade was announced? I do…The addition of Gonzalez is going to cause a lot of sleepless nights for opposing defensive coordinators.
2) Kellen Winslow – TAM – TE
FROM: Cleveland TO: Tampa Bay – Winslow was a physical marvel when he came out of Miami. Loaded with all the talent in the world and brimming with self confidence. That was six years ago. Injuries and attitude have derailed his career to make him a shell of his former self. Why would Tampa trade a first round pick for him? The hope is that a change of scenery and fresh start could be all he needs. I’m not drinking the kool-aid just yet on the self proclaimed solider. I feel Winslow is a low end TE1 with baggage…but I’ve been wrong before.
3) Derrick Ward – TAM – RB
FROM: NY Giants TO: Tampa Bay – Ward has flown under the radar with the quarterback competition brewing in Tampa. The fact is he’s in a great situation to emerge as a decent fantasy option. Tampa under went a major over haul this off season and Ward could benefit the most from all the turn over. Last years starter Earnest Graham returns and could find himself on the low end of the dreaded RBBC (running back by committee) both backs have a similar skill set but Graham is coming back from a major injury. The smart money is on Ward to take the majority of the snaps and establish his role as the lead back.
4) Fred Taylor – NEP – RB
FROM: Jacksonville TO: Patriots – Taylor is considered one of the most underrated backs for someone with over 11,000 career rushing yards. At 33 years of age one has to wonder how much he has left in the tank? He joins a loaded Pats team that could help him add to his impressive resume. If Maroney continues to warrant his bust status, then Taylor could join Sammy Morris as the lead runners in New England’s back field. I wouldn’t trust the Pats to lean on one guy and offer us any type of consistent fantasy runner. But…if they do then Taylor will have decent fantasy value for the super bowl favorites.
5) Terrell Owens – BUF – WR
FROM: Dallas TO: Buffalo - T.O. joins a Bills team that could produce some decent fantasy options and drama for us this year. If the O-line can protect Trent Edwards long enough for him to spread the ball around then all will be well. But…If Edwards struggles getting his loud mouth wide out the ball…Well…just ask Jeff Garcia, Donavan McNabb and Tony Romo how much fun they had playing with him. For all the hype T.O. brings, I just hope he can at least finally help free up Lee Evans.
6) T.J. Houshmandzadeh – SEA – WR
FROM: Cincinnati TO: Seattle - Houshmandzadeh should be in line for another great season as soon as he gets over the culture shock of playing for a semi-decent Seattle franchise. Housh could be just the cure for Matt Hasselbecks sore back. The Hawks should be able to battle Arizona for the weak NFC west title. T.J. should be in line for another pro bowl year.
7) Matt Cassel – KAN – QB
FROM: New England TO: KC – Don’t go over board with expectations for Cassel this year. The Chiefs are not the Patriots and trading Tony Gonzalez is only going to hurt his transition. As of right now he’s a high end #2 fantasy quarterback. With that being said there is some hope. 1. He needs to pick up the playbook quickly 2. Larry Johnson returns to his pro bowl form and stays out of trouble 3. Brad Cottam steps in, and steps up. The 6’7 270 lb second year TE out of Tennessee needs to emerge as a legit receiving option. If all this happens then feel free to bump Cassel up to a low end QB1 status.
8) Sage Rosenfels – MIN – QB
FROM: Houston TO: Minnesota - I really liked this move when it happened. Sage is a much better signal caller then Tavaras Jackson…hands down. Now only if someone could tell his head coach and general manager this. Apparently Brad Childress (head coach) still has hope for Tarvaris Jackson! Tarvaris Jackson?! He’s the head coach for an NFL team and gets to watch every game from the sideline…can’t he see how bad Jackson sucks? The Vikings are a QB away from being contenders. Sage could be the game manager that does just enough to push them over the hump. Why not give him the chance? Stay tuned and monitor this situation throughout the summer. If he gets the job Sage could have decent value leading this very talented team.
Lets not even get started on the Brett Farve saga…
