As crazy football fanatics like ourselves prepare to analyze how the draft has changed team dynamics and which off-season moves had the most impact, you should be thinking about the big day! Let the chumps in your league frantically scramble for their cheat-sheets on draft day while you sit back and enjoy your frosty beverage. Now is the time to think about your top 5 picks, your sleepers, and that one guy that you want to gamble on for the upcoming season.
We all know guys are poor planners by nature, so let’s keep this simple and stupid. Preparation for draft day is crucial!! Like a good poker game, you need to come prepared mentally or you can kiss that money goodbye! Here are the best preparation techniques that I can recommend as we approach draft day.
First, what kind of beer are you bringing to the draft? Be sure to think about what the other clowns in your league drink before you settle on your favorite. Get at least a thirty rack, and be sure to spread the wealth!! After all, this is your one chance to get your competition all F’d up so that you can take advantage of them. Think of it like those good’old college parties when you were trying to get lucky, the same principals apply, just don’t be that idiot that decides to start winking! See… This planning sh-t ain’t so bad now is it?? And you have all summer to scout your league chumps to find their vulnerabilities!
Second, lets try to think back and remember last years draft. Who got all banged up and who tried to stay sober? Who drafted first, and how did the flow of the first round or two go?? Was there a run on QB’s early? How did the final scoring play out as far as players stats are concerned? These simple questions may reveal a ton about how you should plan. Here is a quick list of things to do for your summer planning to help secure your championship, and bragging rights.
- Go back and review last years draft. (You should have at least the first two rounds written down… If not, don’t F that up again this year!)
- Review the Final Scoring to see which position players finished where. Review the top 50 total players based on your league scoring. Then look at the top 25 players by position. (Don’t forget about key injuries, aka Brady, which will skew the results a bit. Yes, it could happen to your 1st round pick too!)
- Take a look at your leagues final standings. Who finished ahead of you and why? (Surely someone got lucky with Slaton, etc., so unless you finished in 2nd you have some work to do!)
By reviewing these three simple things, you will have a much better idea of how your league scoring works and this will be the basis for your planning going forward. Remember, you need to pay close attention to position players and where they finished in your leagues scoring system. Differentials are the key here! Don’t think that because the top 50 was all WR’s that you need to spend a first round pick on one. Look for the positions that will separate you from the rest of the smelly drunk jerks in you league. Time is money, so be sure to spend some time here or come November you will be out of both!!
Finally, be careful reading those Fantasy articles that say “draft RB’s with your first three picks overall” because your league scoring may dramatically change the results of this strategy, and it’s usually not pretty!
