With the 2009 draft in the rear view mirror we can now take a look at this years incoming rookies and speculate who will have a significant fantasy impact. This list of players are guys I feel landed in dream situations and have the best chance to succeed. It’s important to note that last years draft class was very special. The 2008 class produced several impact players at almost every skill position. Don’t over value these guys on draft day based on the success of last years class.
- Chris Wells -RB- Arizona - I love this pick! Wells landed in the perfect situation for an incoming back. The Cardinals’ have a prolific offense with arguably the best receiver tandem in the history of football. The one thing the super bowl runner up lacked last season was a consistent ground game. The 6’1 235lb Wells joins last years rookie Tim Hightower as what should be a much improved running game. Hightower should remain the goal line back with Wells doing most of the heavy lifting. Think Lendale White and Chris Johnson from the Titans last year. Wells is a perfect fit for the Cards scheme and I would be more than happy to have him as my RB2 this year.
- Donald Brown -RB- Indianapolis – The Colts do an excellent job of selecting the best available player year in and year out. Brown should add a level of consistency that was missing from last years offense. Joseph Addai never looked healthy last season and the ground game suffered because of it. The UConn product is a well rounded back who looks to be a perfect fit into the Colts scheme. Brown and Addai should form a very capable and potentially lethal combination.
- Knowshon Moreno -RB- Denver - Yes 20% of the Broncos roster are running backs. However, none of the other backs posses the skill set of Knowshon Moreno. I think Denver could have used this pick to help the defense but instead got a potential offensive stud for years to come. Knowshon is a complete back who will thrive in Josh McDaniels offense. Denver has a great O-line, above average receivers and an underrated QB in Kyle Orton. Regardless of the 10 other running backs on the roster, I feel Knowshon walked into a dream situation. He should be the key to the Denver ground game.
- Percy Harvin -WR- Minnesota - Don’t get me wrong Harvin comes to the Vikings with some baggage. But, lets not let the off the field stuff cloud the fact that he is an explosive football player who can score from anywhere on the field at anytime. With Harvin in the fold the Vikings now have another new toy to add to an already very talented offense that is desperate to take the pressure off of AP and whom ever their QB will be. The team traded for Sage Rosenfels in the off season in an attempt to solidify what was has been a shaky and inconsistent quarterback situation. I picture Harvin as a Reggie Bush type who should contribute right off the bat in a number of ways. He can line up anywhere on the field in every situation. With teams focusing on AP, Harvin should see a good share of safteies and linebackers in coverage. And with his speed that’s a recipe for success, including making the Vikes Defense potentially more valuable as well with Harvin returning kicks.
- Jeremy Maclin -WR- Philadelphia - Maclin was the third wide out drafted in this years class behind Darrius Heyward-Bey and Michael Crabtree. Although I try to shy away from rookie wide outs Maclin is in a great situation to succeed. The Eagles who were in need of finding more play makers on offense to help take the pressure off McNabb and Westbrook. Maclin displays exceptional vertical speed and run after the catch ability that should make him a perfect fit for the Eagles. He joins last years rookie standout DeSean Jackson and speedy seven year pro Kevin Curtis along with hold overs Hank Baskett, Jason Avant and Reggie Brown to form a potentially formidable group.
- LeSean McCoy -RB- Philadelphia- The Eagles used there second round pick on the potential heir apparent to Brian Westbrook. The Pitt product should be in line for a hefty workload while sharing time with Westbrook. Don’t be surprised if both these guys are on the field at the same time. Westbrook lined up in the slot with McCoy in the backfield is going to make it difficult for opposing teams to prepare for. Head coach Andy Reid has positioned his team as the front runners in the NFC.
