Wide open – WR report 2009
1. Boldin
Beyond the point of no return? With all the Larry Fitz attention as of late, people seem to have forgotten how dominant Boldin’s first 10 games were. There was not a more physical receiver in the league with a blood hounds sense of smell for the goal line. Does he stay a cardinal? Possible destinations? I’d love to see him in an Eagle uniform… That is if McNabb stays in Phili (that’s a whole other write up – see d12 QB’s). Does Warner stay? (again – see d12 QB’s). Impact on Fitz if he leaves? Lots of questions surrounding the pass happy Cards for next season.
2. Housh.
Another multi-faceted dilemma. Housh made lemonade with lemons (ryan Fitzpatrick), but where does the reception machine end up in 09. Palmers return? Can Ocho come back to form? If the stars align, Cincy could have promise – then again every year the Bengals seem to be looking to the heavens for help.
3. Megatron
The future of the position. Calvin did more with nothing than any other wide out in the league. He finished tied for the most touchdown receptions in the league with Larry Fitz. The only difference was that Fitz had a future hall of famer throwing him the ball and two, thousand yard receivers prohibiting the rolling of coverage. Every play Megatron was double or triple covered. He was dealing with customers along the lines of Orvlosky, Stanton, Furrey, McDonald… Stop me when you hear a name that you recognize. He’s the best player that none of us get to watch (unless you got NFL ticket – plug, plug).
4. Mr Moss
The greatest season in the positions history – Randy Moss 07. Re-united Brady-to-Moss. Salivating as I type. I’ll leave it at that.
5. Rookie wide outs
It has been drilled into fantasy culture: “don’t draft rookie receivers!”. The virgin seasons of Eddie Royal , Desean Jackson, and even Donnie Avery have us questioning what has been thought to be fantasy law. The so called “3 year learning curve” philosophy has come into question. But buyer beware for there are still the James Hardy’s, the limas Sweed’s and the Devin Thomas’ of the world. The “too small for the NFL”, speedsters, with the dual threat as return men were the ones who were making a splash in 08.
6. Where will the Crabtree be planted?
Staying on the topic of rookie receivers – where will the most talented incumbent lay his roots. We will watch and wait. Fantasy brothers has him being selected by the Seattle Seahawks who are in dire need of an entire offensive overhaul. The hawks fall from grace has been a rapid one. Time to burn the fields and plant a new crop.
7.Plax
Hate the guy. Don’t want him on my NFL team. Don’t want to have him on my fantasy squad. But what happens to Plax, and what the Giants do to fill the void has serious fantasy implications. Toomer is too old. Smith is more of a slot guy and Hixon is a number 2, not a 1. Plax leaves the g-men with a giant bullet-hole to fill.
8. M&M
Marshall and McDaniels that is. “Baby T.O.” is not a baby any longer. Brandon Marshall seemed to cool down as the season progressed, but all the tools are in place for a great offensive year in Denver – let me take that back…. Almost all the tools are in place – (see d12 running back report). With Eddie royal demanding respect on the opposing end, and Scheffler commanding the middle of the field, the cutler-to-Marshall connection should be hitting on all cylinders. The addition of josh McDaniels as the head coach can only improve the explosive potential of this offense. Under McDaniels the patriots had the greatest offensive season in history. Marshall has already lived up to his early career comparisons to T.O. lets see if he can earn the honor of being compared to Moss.
9. The running back, running back days are truly over
The era of true work horse running backs are coming to a close. The position is plagued with injuries and surprisingly has been the easiest position on the field to fill in with back ups. A dominant receiver can offer a safer bet. Given your leagues scoring system and formulation of starting roster will set the tone for positional importance.
10. T.O.
No wide out report would be complete without the positions loudest mouth. This is called the “dirty” dozen. Disappointment in Dallas is an understatement. We all know that with T.O. it is just a matter of time before he starts running his mouth. Speaking of disappointment – the Roy Will deal has not panned out. Lets see what an entire off-season can do for team chemistry. T.O. quiet? I don’t think so. Plax has just taken the bullet as the NFL bad boy for now. I still believe that T.O. has another big season under his belt(right next to his sharpie and cell phone).
11. Antonio Bryant
Tampa made the right decision in tagging the possilble best wideout waiver pick up of the 08 season. With Gacia on theĀ go we wonder who will be throwing him the ball? The real question here is not wondering if Bryant will have a repeat performance in 09, but who will be the “Antonio Bryant” of 09. Who is thisĀ years surprise pick up? Fantasy Brothers specializes in knowing the hot free agent/waiver wire pick-ups prior to the competition. Last years mid-year pick-ups on other sites were already drafted by fantasy brothers. Get tomorrows pick-ups today.
12. Marvelous Marvin?
Marvin Harrison is on the move. But how much is left in the tank? How much of his success has depended on Peyton Manning? Once part of the fantasy royal cabinet, Harrison has fallen out of the trust of fantasy owners throughout the land. His value highly depends on where he falls. People always seem to love the “comeback” story, but don’t get caught up in “once upon a time” come draft day. Stay tuned for details.
